Lab Description:

Join this immersive, hands-on ophthalmology workshop designed specifically for general practitioners. In this collaborative, case-based session, attendees will work in small teams to evaluate and solve real-world ophthalmologic cases commonly encountered in practice.

Each case will include clinical images, patient signalment, and detailed case histories—covering conditions such as retinal detachment, uveitis, lens luxation, and iris cysts. Participants will be guided through diagnostic interpretation, treatment planning, and identification of breed-related risk factors.

Expert faculty Dr. Josh Broadwater and Dr. Natalie Marks will provide real-time insights and clinical pearls throughout the workshop. Dr. Broadwater will place special emphasis on helping attendees distinguish cases that require urgent specialty referral versus those that can be confidently managed in general practice or through appropriate home care.

Lab Description:

This laboratory puts the scope directly in participants’ hands — no anesthetized patient required. All skills are practiced on realistic, simulated canine gastrointestinal models across four instructor-supported stations. Participants rotate through focused, individualized time driving the scope: mastering the dials, buttons, and image capture; navigating the esophagus and stomach and passing through the pylorus into the duodenum; and practicing the two techniques that matter most in clinical cases — diagnostic mucosal biopsy and endoscopic foreign body retrieval. Small-group rotations ensure every participant leaves with meaningful hands-on repetitions and the confidence to translate these skills to patients.

Learning objectives:
1. Demonstrate correct scope handling, including dial control, button functions, and image and video capture.
2. Navigate a complete upper GI examination on a realistic canine GI model, including passage through the pylorus into the duodenum.
3. Perform mucosal biopsy technique on simulated tissue, emphasizing forceps positioning for maximal diagnostic yield.
4. Select appropriate retrieval instruments and demonstrate safe endoscopic foreign body removal on simulated foreign bodies.
